Headshots & Personal Branding - tips & preparation ahead of your shoot

Taking the time to prepare for your headshot will 100% result in better images

Clothing

Start to prepare and think about your wardrobe ahead of the shoot. What colours suit you / what is your palette?

Bring clothing options on hangers and ironed. I advise smart professional clothing, neutral colours, minimize patterns and loud clothing (unless this is your company look / branding). I have a screen to change behind.

Jewellery

How will it look with different tops? / bring options if you like.

Makeup

Keep it matt if you are doing your own, including lips. If you are visiting a makeup artist make sure you tell them it’s for a professional headshot. Makeup should be light and as matt as possible.

You are welcome to bring a makeup artist with you or if you would like makeup professionally applied, I can highly recommend makeup artists I have worked with on shoots.

Hair

Consider if you feel better when you’ve been to the hairdressers, then try schedule an appointment beforehand.

If you plan to change your hair style throughout the shoot start with it down before then putting it up. Don’t wash your hair on the day. Hair in general should be brushed & neat.

Glasses

If you wear glasses, please bring a spare/different pair to try, the lenses can react differently with flash, especially if they are uv coated.

Ideas

Creating a Pinterest board is a great tool. It will trigger ideas for settings, clothing and how you would like the images to look at the end. It also helps me to prepare and get an understanding of you & your brand. Look at the headshots on my website for backgrounds and poses. https://claireconnoldphotography.co.uk/headshots-st-albans-photographer/

Be prepared to smile… What To Expect:

HEADSHOT- A headshot is generally mid chest upwards. There is a background paper and lighting set up in my studio at 69 The Park, St Albans AL1 4RX. Parking is on the drive or road (parking restrictions between 11am – 1pm Mon-Fri).  It can take around 20 minutes, please say when you arrive if you need to dash back to work at a certain time. There are a couple of steps up to the door so if you have mobility issues please let me know in advance.

BRANDING An outdoor or studio portrait shoot can take at least an hour, especially if we are shooting a few different backgrounds and positions. Please bring any props with you like laptops, mugs, awards, marketing material etc.

Why? There is no better way to build instant trust

Your headshot /portraits need to be good quality, professional and a good representation of you & your business.

People out there want to see who you are. It’s important to look friendly, open and honest.

According to an article by Forbes Magazine, you have 7 seconds to make a first impression.

That’s what your headshot can do for you. It is your virtual introduction to be used on your website, social media and directories.

Your professional headshot will not only build credibility, it also helps give you and your business a more professional look.
